Fun facts on the animals you will find for Safari Summer
News: 6 July 2023
Back to newsThis summer, we are home to 10 amazing animal sculptures that visitors will be able to find roaming around the Centre and on Chantry Square from Saturday 22nd July to Sunday 3rd September 2023.
All of our animals will have one fun fact on them, but we wanted to share a few more so you can get to know them a little bit better before you begin the free safari trail.
One animal you’ll be able to find in Chantry Place is a panda and did you know that sometimes pandas do a handstand when they wee?! Luckily for us, our panda will be standing! They also spend 10-16 hours of the day eating.
A baby giraffe is another animal sculpture you’ll be able to find within the Centre. These incredible mammals are the tallest in the world and can stand up after just 30 minutes of being born!
In addition to a panda and baby giraffe, we have eight more animal sculptures including a gorilla, a hippo and a lion. Here are the rest of the animals that will be with us this summer and some more cool facts about them!
- Gorilla: We share around 98% of our DNA with Gorillas, plus they have 16 different types of calls!
- Hippo: Hippos are most active at night when they forage for food. They are herbivores and eat mostly grass. In just one night, they can guzzle down up to 35kg of their favourite grub. That’s a lot of grass!
- Lion: Lions are actually born spotty! Young lions have rosettes and spots on their sandy coats, but these generally disappear as they mature.
- Parrots: Parrots are known for being chatty, however, the world record holder recognised more than 1,700 words! That’s one impressive parrot!
- Mandrill: Famous for their coloured faces, infants have pink or brown coloured faces. More colours appear as they develop and grow!
- Elephant: Elephants are highly sociable and intelligent animals and demonstrate behaviours that we recognise as compassion and kindness.
- Bear: Although large, grizzly bears can run up to an incredible 40mph – the same pace as a greyhound!
- Zebra: No two zebras have the same stripes, and the width and pattern of the stripes will vary widely by species!
Don’t forget to take part in our free safari trail this summer, where you can find out even more cool facts about these animals!
