Meet the Artist – Paul Fox Goddard’s Clockwork Creation for GoGoSafari 2025
News: 19 May 2025
Back to newsEarlier this year, we were excited to reveal that Chantry Place is a proud presenting partner of Break’s GoGoSafari trail. As part of this colourful celebration of creativity and community, we’re sponsoring our very own sculpture – a mighty rhino – designed and painted by artist Paul Fox Goddard.
As we inch closer to the trail starting on the 23rd of June 2025, we caught up with Paul to learn more about the inspiration behind his bold and brilliant design.
A mechanical marvel
Without giving too much away, Paul gave us a glimpse into the imaginative spark that shaped his rhino concept. “I was inspired by the art, style, and fashion of steampunk,” he explained. “The primal strength and power of the rhinoceros lent itself to something mechanical. I was inspired by the title of Burgess’s seminal novel, A Clockwork Orange.”
This fusion of industrial mechanics and natural power has created a one-of-a-kind sculpture. Expect cogs, colour, and a larger-than-life personality.
Family inspiration, artistic detail
One surprising source of inspiration? A Christmas stocking filler! “A couple of years ago, Father Christmas gave one of my boys a make-your-own clockwork animal kit – and it was a rhino,” Paul said. “I thought, what if a real, life-sized version were to exist?”
From that playful idea grew an intricate design, filled with rich steampunk elements. “In every piece of artwork I produce, I hide an elaborate little star design,” Paul added, so be sure to get up close and see if you can spot it!
Challenges and favourite moments
Creating a large-scale sculpture isn’t without its hurdles. Paul shared a memorable challenge from the painting process: “Trying to paint in the nooks, crannies, cracks, and crevices of a big fibreglass rhino was much trickier than I expected!”
But even with those tough spots, the joy of creating something so unique shines through. When asked what he’s most proud of, Paul didn’t hesitate: “The cogs.”
What to expect this summer
With the sculpture now complete, Paul hopes the finished piece sparks imagination and excitement: “I want people to have an image in their mind of this great mechanical beast stomping, steaming, and charging around – what would it be like to come face-to-face with this in reality?”
In three words, he describes his creation as a “colourful, mechanical monstrosity,” or, for those who prefer a more elegant phrase, “a clockwork rhinoceros”.
As we prepare for the trail launch in June 2025, anticipation is building. Paul himself is looking forward to “seeing parents with children marvelling at and crawling all over the various amazing animal sculptures.”
More than just art
Of course, GoGoSafari 2025 isn’t just about bold designs and summer fun. At its heart is a mission to raise awareness and vital funds for Break, a charity dedicated to supporting vulnerable children, young people, and families across our region.
We can’t wait for you to discover our rhino – and all the other incredible animals – this summer. Be sure to visit Chantry Place during the trail, and keep your eyes peeled for those hidden stars and brilliant details that make Paul’s sculpture so unforgettable.
